Question: Hi Dr...My orthopedist has determined that I qualify for a right hip replacement..(bone on bone) I am 90 years old (in relative good health) but we agree we do not want an operation...they are going to give me a cortisone shot to help...I usderstand there is a gel treatment available and perhaps other solutions...what do you think...thanx

I appreciate that it is perhaps a good idea to avoid surgery due to the advanced age even though you might be a candidate for hip replacement.

Usually the area has components of inflammation that would subside on cortisone injection and so it is a good idea to go for the suggested injection. Injection of a gel into the joint space often helps but the doctor would be able to confirm whether that is applicable to your case.

I do not think that any other treatment would be suitable (other than hot compress and use of pain medication).
