Can Doxepin Be Taken For Insomnia?

default
Posted on Tue, 4 Oct 2016
Question: I take Serax 30mg to go to sleep. I go to bed between 10-10:30pm. I wake up every night between 1:30am and 3:30am. My insomnia is horrible during allergy season. (I have been getting allergy shots for over 10 years now.) My pulmonologist prescribed Sonata 10mg, but I just cannot get back to sleep with this medication. I also have depression and anxiety (Xanax 0.5mg XR before bed) so I was thinking about asking my psychiatrist to try doxepin. Any thoughts?

Yes Doxepin is a viable option. Doxepin is indicated in both DEPRESSION and ANXIETY where its Initiated at low dose , 25 mg/day and gradually titrated upwards every week. Chosing a psychiatric medication can involve initial trial and error.
It is also indicated in INSOMNIA and
Sleep maintenance.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
