Can HIV Be Contracted Through Open Wounds In Groin Area

default
Posted on Tue, 4 Aug 2015
Question: Hi,
On 31 May 2015 i had sex. After returning i discovered an open wound on both my groin caused by rubbing against my underwear. I believe this wound happened in the morning and the sex was around 8pm. I am scared the vaginal fluid might come in contact with my wound. I had tridot test after 3, 4 and 6 weeks. All came out negative. My temperature is around 99F. How high of a risk do i have of getting hiv?

Brief Answer:
The risk is less as TRI-DOT antibody test is negative at 3, 4 and 6 weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

Welcome to HCM.

First of all, you have to be sure about the status of the girl with whom you had sex whether she was positive or not.

There is risk of getting HIV infection only when she is positive and her vaginal fluid might come in contact with your wound directly.

Lastly, your TRI-DOT antibody test for HIV is negative at 3, 4 and 6 weeks so chances of getting an infection are very remote; so be relaxed.

Thank You

Thank you for the quick response. My follow up question is:
1. How high is the risk of infection from the scenario of vaginal fluid coming in contact with an open wound?
2. On the 6th week testing, testing was done with both Tridot and Alere Trueline and both are negative. Are they both 3rd generation tests and how accurate are they when combined together?

Brief Answer:
The risk is high and when tri-dot combined with alere trueline 99% accurate

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

The risk of getting an infection with HIV is high from the scenario of vaginal fluid coming in contact with an open wound directly if the girl is positive.

Tri-dot antibody and Alere Trueline both are 3rd generation tests. Alere trueline detects both HIV1/2 antibodies and HIV1 p24 antigen. When both tests combined together then they are almost 99% accurate.

Thank you for your reply. As you can imagine, I was under terrible stress. Your replies indeed put my mind at ease a lot.
For my final question:
1. When you say Tridot and Alere Truline together are almost 99% accurate, do you mean their accuracy after 6 weeks?
2. When should I get tested again?

Thank you so much.

Brief Answer:
Yes it is the accuracy of combined test after 6 weeks post exposure.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

As I had already told the accuracy of combined test together is very near to 100% after 6 weeks post exposure and we can consider it as conclusive.

If still you want to get tested again than go for it after 3 months post exposure to be 100% accurate otherwise I don't think it is needed.

Thank You

Thank you so much.

Can you clarify one thing please?

I could not find any information on Alere Trueline (I could find only Alere Determine). Since 3rd Generation tests dont usually screen for p24 antigens. Can you please confirm that Trueline screens for the antigen?

I know I'm asking for a lot but I'm stressed out and I could really use the clarification for my peace of mind. I hope you understand.

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Yes Alere Trueline test detects the presence of p24 antigen along with Abs.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

First of all, you need not to panic at all as the chances of getting an infection are very remote.

Second, Alere Trueline test is 3rd generation but it detects the presence of p24 antigen along with Antibodies to HIV 1 & 2. So be relaxed and go ahead in life happily.

Thank You
