Brief Answer:
Please discuss surgery options to prevent complications of varicose veins

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Varicose veins are due to a problem causing back flow in the veins of the lower limbs due to malfunctioning tiny valves in the veins. The veins are a channel of tubes carrying blood from to the heart.

In varicose veins, the veins of the lower limbs are unable to maintain a flow of blood in one direction and there is pooling of blood in the superficial veins of the legs due to incompetent perforators. This causes skin changes and in severe cases cause ulcers. If the skin over your legs has started peeling then you need to control the pooling of blood in the legs.

The control of varicose veins can be tried by allowing postural drainage and wearing stockings. This however will work only in mild cases. In severe cases, the varicose veins have to be treated by surgery and laser surgery is a successful method of treating it.

Before getting surgery done, you must get lower limb venous Doppler test done to know where the non functioning valves and incompetent perforators are located. This will help your doctor to guide your treatment. You are young at 39 years age and measures are to be taken to prevent complications.

During surgery, the most incompetent perforators are removed and pooling of venous blood is prevented.

Please discuss with your doctors and get a lower limb venous Doppler test done if not yet done.
