Question: I’m a 72 year old male, over weight, but active, semi-retired and have recently been experiencing almost constant nasal drip. I live in Northwestern XXXXXXX In 2003 I received a heart transplant and I lead a pretty active lifestyle. In July of 2017 after a perforated bowl incident I was diagnosed with large B cell lymphoma. After 6 months of chemo therapy I was declared cancer free. My drugs include Mycophenolate, tacrolimus, atrovastatin, Enapril, gabapentin, pantoprazole, pramhpexole, cymbalta and a baby aspirin daily. I have not had an issue with allergies in the past but now I think that may have changed. Is it safe for me to take OTC medications such as Claritin or a similar OTC based on my past medical history?

Brief Answer:
Do not start Claritin; interaction may occur. Cetirizine can be taken

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way. Claritin contains Loratidine which is a antihistamine. There is no documented interaction of Loratidine with Enapril, Gabapentin, Pantoprazole, Pramipexole, Cymbalta or a baby aspirin. However, Loratidine increases the effect of Mycophenolate and Tacrolimus.

While Atrovastatin may increase the effect of Loratidine. One option that you can discuss with your treating doctor is the use of cetirizine. It is least likely to cause any interaction with the medication you mentioned. So i would recommend you to once discuss with your treating doctor before starting antihistamine.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Wishing you good health!
