Question : can I take ibuprofen and pepto bismol at the same time? I've been sick with the flu for a week, not eating anything much, but tonight ate dinner chicken and tomatoes and gluten free pasta with olive oil. I've got a horrible stomach ache, threw up twice - the second time after taking some generic pepto bismol - now still feeling a bit bloated and uncomfortable
help!

Dear Madam,
Thank you for posting your query on HCM.
Well looking into your problem I would like to tell you that you should take them at an interval of half an hour at least because if you take two drugs at same time there absorption is somehow affected .
If you had a reaction with pepto bismol it will be good if you substitute it with proton pump inhibitor like pantaprazole . which are safe also and very effective. You can talk to your treating doctor for this .
Take care.

Thank you for advising about waiting half an hour between taking different medications. My real question was whether the ingredients in Pepto Bismol would react with ibuprofen. I did take it, probably half an hour after the pepto bismol and threw up a third time but hopefully got enough in my systerm that it relieved my stomach pain and I was able to sleep. -- I do have some advice for you however, if you see my medical history notes, you'll see that I had an adverse drug reacton to Protonix which is a proton pump inhibitor so I would never advise taking them! Protonix caused liver cancer in 3 different types of lab animals and also caused liver problems in humans during clinical trials and yet it was still FDA approved and is one of the most widely prescribed drugs on the market. Even in the literature provided with the prescription it will say that something like 1% of patients will have problems taking it. As a result of taking Protonix in 2007, I had liver failure and severe abdominal pain (the very symptom I was trying to alleviate!) It was a matter of months before I was able to eat normally or to participate in normal daily activities. I would never advise anyone to take proton pump inhibitors.

Dear Madam,
Thank you for reverting back.
I appreciate your knowledge , Pepto Bismol and ibuprofen are not contraindicated with each other so you can use them .
If you are allergic to proton pump inhibitor then you should not take it . Other options would be sucralfate and drugs like ranitidine which you can discuss with your treating doctor .
