Question: I am taking thyronorm 25ug for 10 days now after being diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Periods expected date was 6/7/14 but haven't started yet. Had unprotected sex on 8/7/14. Can I take emergency contraceptive along with thyronorm tablet? I don't want to get pregnant.

Brief Answer:
Answer below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

I understand your problem.

You can take emergency contraceptive pill with thyroxine as there are no reported interactions between the two drugs.

Just ensure that you do not take them together. It is recommended to take the thyronorm empty stomach and then not eat anything for the next hour. So take it early morning. The emergency pill can be taken after your lunch so as to cause less gastric side effects.

Do not worry as the contact has occured in the premenstrual phase which is less fertile and so chances of pregnancy are low.
The delayed periods may be due to the thyroid medication as well as the thyroid disorder [ Hashimotos ].
Rmemember that emergency pill may delay your period a bit further and also cause nausea and vomiting mimicking pregnancy.

Take care and do not worry.
Hope this satisfies your query.

Thank you for the immediate and concise reply!

Can you suggest some pill that has thyroxine in it? I shall take it immediately. Also, how long can my periods be delayed for?

Brief Answer:
Take your regular drug thyronorm.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome back,

I am sorry when I said thyroxine I meant your present drug thyronorm. It is the same [ we tend to use the generic terms rather than the brand names that may differ]. You may take that as well as the emergency contraceptive.

Sorry again if I caused a confusion.

The periods vary from person to person. Some women may have a period within a few days and some may miss their period for 15 to 20 days also. So this is variable and unpredictable. Your thyroid status will also influence your periods.

But if the emergency pill is taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex then the delayed period should not be a cause of concern as there is no chance that pregnancy is causing the delay.

Take care.
