Can IBS Be Cured?

default
Posted on Thu, 11 May 2023
Question: I've this on and off tummy pains from last 1 month. it started off as diarhae and i avoided taking any medicines. The poop's consistency changed to a bit creamy yet grainy and then solid after 10 days but with times of creamy grainy stools again. even the solid defecation was not like regular sausage shaped but ripped off surface finish. i was detected IBS some 7 years back but I had taken control over it and no serious or this long IBS attack has been experienced since then. But emptying my bowels completely is one of the issue, i feel bloated at times too and experience a lot of discharging gas. - Please comment on possible outcomes from my situation - kindly suggest me stool, blood or any other tests I can have just to be sure it's not something serious in the colon. I'm sure it's something wrong in the large intestine. a recent picture of poop is attached

Brief Answer:

Detail below.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

From your history, it seems there is a fresh episode of IBS.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a disorder of the intestines commonly marked by abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in a person's bowel habits.

This may include diarrhea or constipation, or both, with one occurring after the other.

Most people who have IBS have a mild form, which they can cope with quite well without getting any treatment. But sometimes the symptoms are so strong that they significantly affect people's everyday lives and can cause distress.

There is no cure for IBS. Over time, though, many people find out what makes them feel better, and what makes them feel worse. And various things can relieve the symptoms.

These kinds of symptoms may have other causes, though, such as lactose intolerance or gluten intolerance (celiac disease).

Gluten is a protein that is found in different types of grains and is an ingredient in many foods.

Blood tests and other tests can be used to find out whether the symptoms are being caused by either of these food intolerances. But some people have both irritable bowel syndrome and a food intolerance at the same time.

There is no specific test for IBS, the diagnosis is made clinically but you can go for CT scan abdomen, routine stool test to role out any other problem.

There are also a number of different treatments that aim to relieve the symptoms.

Because the causes of IBS are not clear, it is difficult to find suitable treatments. But research has suggested that at least some medications and treatments may help. Treatments for IBS include:

Fiber supplements, for instance, made from psyllium
Peppermint oil
Probiotics
Anti-cramping medications
Medications for constipation or diarrhea
Various medications, such as antibiotics or antidepressants
Psychological treatments, such as stress management or hypnosis

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
