Can Lexapro Cause Fluctuations In Thyroid Levels?

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Jan 2017
Question: I am having a lot of problems lately with my thyroid as levels have gone from normal to high and/or extremely low.. I have had several medication changes with synthroid dosages from 125 mcg to 100 mcg to 88 mcg back to 100 mcg which is the dosage I am currently on . I am also dealing with grief issues as my daughter died in Feb. 2016. I am not doing well mentally as grief issues have impacted by ability to concentrate, sleep, etc...
I question the need to be on a anti-depressant but worry about how this impacts thyroid levels. Also I was on Lexapro for a short time but did not do well with the side effects. I no longer take Lexapro.

Brief Answer:
Antidepressant do not affect thyroid

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks fort using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

I like to assure you that antidepressant do not affect your thyroid status negatively. There is no such evidence available in regard to various antidepressants. I mean to say that if there is depression antidepressants should be started without any concern for thyroid.

Regarding choice of antidepressant I think Pristiq could be a better option for you. In my experience I find pristiq most useful antidepressant in women after menopause. The medication have good efficacy and have limited side effects.

I hope this helps you.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
