Can Losartan Cause Cough?

default
Posted on Wed, 16 Aug 2017
Question: I have been on Atenolol, 100mg. once a day which I take at bedtime. Also, have been put on another drug, norvac, to be taken once a day as well, (100mg) I was on losartan (100mg.) until last week. I became really ill with an uncontrollable cough about 4 weeks ago and continually worsened during the past month. My doctor took me off the losartan one week ago and perscribed the norvasc (AMLODPINE, 5MG. ) TO USE instead of the losartan as my cough was really bad and nothing seemed to help. He thought I had developed an allergy to the losaran. I am still coughing some but not as much as I have been doing. Will this coughing probably go away in a short time with the new drug? Appreciate any input you might have. Thanks! XXXXXXX XXXX

Brief Answer:
I confirm that cough is a side effect from Losartan.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Mrs XXXX,

Thank you for using Healthcaremagic to post your health query.
I read carefully your question and I understand your concern.

The cough, that the class of medicines that includes Losartan gives, is typical. It is more of a side effect then an allergy. So yes, since your doctor has ruled out possible causes of cough, it is most likely that the cause has been Losartan.

So with the removal of Losartan, you should not have a cough anymore. The lungs just need a bit of time to heal completely from this side effect and it will need 2-3 weeks. The fact that you are getting better is an indicator that it is working.

On the other side, since blood pressure is well controlled, means that Amlodipine is working too.

I would recommend going to the doctor in around 2 weeks of not completely better.

Hope this is helpful.
