
Can Lyme Disease Be Contracted Through A Tick Bite?

Question : I was recently bitten by a tick and concerned about contracting Lyme's. I have uploaded a photo of the tick and bite. Should I take an antibiotic for preventative measure?

Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.
You have a significant tick bite as evident in the attached photograph.
In the areas where there is endemicty of Lyme's disease, we always give prophylaxis.
However to the best of my knowledge the area you have mentioned is not an endemic area.
However since the bite is significant so first of all the tick should be removed cautiously followed by antibiotic prophylaxis.
The preferred antibiotic for prophylaxis of Lyme's disease is Doxycycline.
So, see your doctor and share my opinion.
He would prescribe you Doxycycline for the same.
