Can Nexium Cloud The Evidence Of GERD Or Barrett's Esophagus?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Apr 2014
Question: I had a complete physical today.....have been taking 40 mg./2x per day of Nexium for quite some time now. I do not have heartburn ever, but ENT (who prescribed Nexium) says evidence of recurring acid reflux is there, and have recurrent sore throats. Is it true that the Nexium could be "clouding" evidence of GERD or Barrett's Esophagus?...my GP said to have an Endoscopy to verify, but I'm so terrified I'm afraid I won't schedule the procedure!!

Brief Answer: Detailed below. Detailed Answer: Hello! Thank you for the query. We can not say that Nexium is clouding evidence of GERD. Nexium is used to treat GERD. It blocks stomach acid secretion so your symptoms of GERD do not appear. This is how it should be treated. Barrets Esophagus is not a condition which gives specific symptoms. Barrets esophagus is a change in esophageal wall (intestinal metaplasia) caused by chronic stomach acid irritation of the esophagus wall. This leads to inflammation and can cause irreversible changes. Barrets esophagus increases risk of esophagus cancer. So answering your question, yes, Nexium intake without gastroscopy can cause that Barrets esophagus wont be diagnosed (as Nexium will cause lack of symptoms). Here is what you should do: - if you have GERD symptoms for a long time (like a year or so), gastroscopy is necessary to rule out stomach cancer, esophagus cancer, Barrets esophagus, Helicobacter Pylori presence - if the symptoms have started recently, Nexium intake without the gastroscopy is not a mistake; if Nexium will cause no symptoms at all, gastroscopy is not necessary right now; but for sure it will be necessary in the future You may also ask your doctor to have gastroscopy in sedation. You will be sleeping and wont remember anything. Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions. Regards.
