Can Norethisterone Be Taken To Treat Delayed Menstruation And Withdrawal Bleeding?

Posted on Wed, 3 Jun 2015
Question: My last period was on 24th march. I took an I pill on 31st march within 18 hours. Since then I have not had a proper period. I had withdrawal bleeding 5 days after taking the pill and then had brown discharge around the time my period was expected. And now I'm having brown discharge again. I did 3 hpts..all negative. I got an ultrasound done which showed nothing abnormal. Now my gynecologist has suggested a course of norethisterone to induce a proper period. Should I take it?

Brief Answer:
Yes, please take it.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
It is common to experience what you are experiencing after the intake of the I pill.
The I pill does commonly cause withdrawal bleed, which you had.
It also alters the amount and date of your next menstrual period.
The menstrual cycle should stabilize within 2 - 3 months, if you always had regular cycles.
As the HPT and ultrasound is negative, yes you should take Norethisterone to induce a proper period.
It is progesterone tablet, and you should take it for 5 - 7 days as prescribed.
Once you stop it, you will get a proper period within maximum one week.
Did you always have regular cycles before the I pill was taken ?
What is your height and weight ?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Take care.

Thank you for your prompt response. I got my period in the morning yesterday. The flow is not as heavy as it usually is. But it feels like a period because I'm having my regular cramps. So I stopped taking the noreithisterone. Yes my periods are fairly regular. My height is 5 feet 4 inches and weight is 54 kg. Along with the ultrasound I also got a blood test done. My prolactin levels were slightly elevated for which I have been advised to take tablet cabergoline once a week. So is this my normal period or another episode of withdrawal bleeding?

I was able to take only one pill of norethisterone before the bleeding started. And now the bleeding has increased like a normal period. And I'm having cramps like I usually do. I'm supposed to take another tablet of cabergoline this week. Does that affect the menstrual cycle in any way?

Brief Answer:
It is not withdrawal bleed, it is your period.

Detailed Answer:
Okay, so this is not withdrawal bleeding, this is your normal period.
High prolactin levels can lead to irregular cycles, so cabergoline should definitely be taken.
IT will not affect your periods, it will only regulate Prolactin levels.
Take care.
