Can Omega-3 Supplements Increase The Risk Of Excessive Bleeding?

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Jul 2015
Question: I am 56, have not had a period since October/November when I had my last birthday. I had a pap smear last month. But I just started Omega 3's, and have been very tired for 2-3 days. Well last night I started a light period. I am a breast cancer survivor, and I am wondering if there is a connection between the Omega 3's and me having a period out of "nowhere". One of the things my doctor said to me, was to let him know if I started bleeding again. This doesn't seem good at all.
I should add that the Oncologist told me to add Iron as I am slightly anemic. I have been taking one pill of slow release 45 mg Iron daily with no problems.
I do not take prescription medications, I take Vitamin D and B complex. The only thing different is the Omega 3's which I added about a week ago.

Brief Answer:
Not related to omega 3

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

I understand your concerns.

Omega 3 do increase bleeding tendencies. You should discontinue these. However, menstrual bleeding is not uncommon in the first year of having apparently stopped periods. It can be due to irregularity of the bleeding before final stopping.

But this is a symptom not to be ignored. It may be because of host of other causes like vaginal atrophy, uterine polyp or even cervical or uterine cancer. hence it needs evaluation by gynecologist. That's why your oncologist had asked to let him know.

Are you or were you on any hormonal therapy for breast cancer, like tamoxifen? Because that can also cause this.

Hope I have answered your query. I will be available to answer further follow-up queries, if any.

No I have never taken Tamoxifen. I'm sure if the recent exam showed cancer, he would have told me by now.

Brief Answer:
yes sure he would have

Detailed Answer:
Tamoxifen is out of the picture then.

I am sure the last pap smear was normal. And as I said most likely this is physiological. But it merits attention, that's why he asked to report back if there is any bleeding.
