Can PRP Promote Regeneration Of Injured Peripheral Nerve?

default
Posted on Mon, 8 Aug 2016
Question: Just looking for s second opinion. 5 months ago I have pain in my nose in different environments with no pain when outside. I had a very dry nose at the time and smoked for 20 years. I could not work. I then smoked Chinese herbal medicine of lotus leaves. The next day I had decreased sense of smell (inside could smell cooking smells, coffee, oranges, cleaners but more faintly than before; outside no smell of grass, trees, flowers). Worse I had no feeling of moisture in my nose - felt like breathing through a straw. Today, no change. It is hard to breathe through my nose as if too much resistance. Two ENT visits: one said mucosa normal and one said dry and crusted. CT scan clear. To me the original problem was nerve-related and I have now significant nerve ending damage now. I did finally quit smoking. I now feel pain in my nose (not sinus pressure) again increasingly in the last few weeks.Questions:
1) does this sound like nerve (both players XXXXXXX and sensory )damage and if so what might be the prognosis? What might be prognosis? Could there be another explanation?
2) I have read about PRP treatment to help nerve regeneration. As hard as it is I can adapt to the lack of smell it is the other nerves that make each day very tough.

Brief Answer:
You can try PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to HealthCareMagic.com I am Dr.J XXXXXXX Anto Bruno Mascarenhas. I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help you.

Q1
Does this sound like nerve (both players XXXXXXX and sensory) damage and if so what might be the prognosis? What might be prognosis?
A1
This does sound like Nerve Damage.
Around 50 percent of people regain their sense of smell to almost full level
Around 25 percent regain partially
Around 25 percent do not get back the sense of smell

Whether you are in the 50 percent who will regain to near full level or whether you are in the 25 percent who will regain partially, or whether you are in the 25 percent who will not get back the smell can be told only 6 months after injury

Q2
Could there be another explanation?
A2
From what you have told till now, Nerve Dysfunction seems to be the most likely diagnosis

Q3
I have read about PRP treatment to help nerve regeneration. As hard as it is I can adapt to the lack of smell it is the other nerves that make each day very tough.
A3
Wait for one more month
If you have not regained your sense of smell, you can try PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Treatment

I had heard that 6-12 months is often needed. i continued smoking after the incident. Is it likely this has slowed down the regenerative process or made it impossible . Quitting was hard. Is there any difference in the healing process between the olfactory and non-olfactory nerves?

That makes perfect sense. Can you speak also to the non-olfactory nerves? Is it the same healing time for those - they are the biggest problem believe it or not.

Brief Answer:
mixed nerves are concerned, the healing will be relatively delayed

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir

A1
Olfactory nerve is a predominantly sensory nerve
The Action Potential almost always travel from periphery to central
So
The healing will be relatively quicker

But
As far as other mixed nerves are concerned, the healing will be relatively delayed
