Question : My granddaughter had a healthy baby boy recently . She needed pertucin to induce labor . 2 weeks later she developed blurred vision and her eyes became extremely irritaded and very painful . It got to the point of excrutiating pain . she was seen by a cornea specialist in philladelphia who is a wonderful doctor The pain is slowly easing up but we would like to know if this could be a side effect of epidural or pertocin. I read that it could cause blurry vision . Is it possible that the medicines could be the cause of her situation The eyes were so painfull and swollen that she could not open them It is slowly getting a little better but she is still suffering It is now 8 days

Brief Answer:

Highly unlikely, by 2 weeks the drugs would have long cleared up.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

I read your question carefully and I understand your concern regarding drug side effects.

However, I do not think that is the case. It is true that in some cases such drugs may cause blurry vision, but that occurs during the time they are still in the blood.

In your granddaughter's case, you state the symptoms to have manifested after 2 weeks.

By that time pitocin and the anesthetics would have been long eliminated by her body, they are eliminated in a matter of hours and even though there are some metabolism differences between individuals 2 weeks are way beyond any individual variations.

So I believe the manifestation time is enough to exclude her eye issues being due to those drugs.

In addition to that the blurry vision usually is due to changes in blood pressure and heart rate from the drugs, not from damage to the eye itself, so even if symptoms manifested in the first few days still the swelling you describe would be hard to attribute on the drugs.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
