Question : My mother in law has come in contact with poison ivy and has recently had a heart attack so is on antihypertensives and a beta blocker. Should she consider taking low dose prednisone that she has on hand to help with puritis?

Regarding your concern, you should know that oral steroids can raise her blood pressure. Besides, they have a lot of adverse effects.

For this reason, I would recommend taking an oral antihistamine (loratadine or cetirizine) instead of steroids to help her with pruritus and use topically a steroid ointment.
