Can Prilosec Cause Kidney Damage?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Oct 2016
Question: I have trouble with excess stomach acid but not reflux. I have been taking Prilosec for a long time which controls it nicely BUT now it is starting to affect my kidneys. Is there something else I can use or something natural that might work?

Brief Answer:
prilosec caused renal damage???

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

first of all let me doubt about prilosec causing renal damage because although it may do so, it is extremely rare... Is your doctor so certain about that? Reflux is a life-long disorder and you're going to suffer a lot of problems without treatment.
Anyway, alternative treatment includes using ranitidine or other drugs from this class. The normal dosage for ranitidine is 150mg twice daily.

Don't forget to avoid having a full stomach or eating certain food that predisposes to reflux like food with increased fat content, too much coffee, alcohol, citrus drinks, etc. Avoid to lie down right after eating. Prefer to walk for a while if possible.

I hope you find my comments helpful!

I stated that I do NOT have trouble with reflux. I have acid indigestion if I don't take Prilosec. There was an ad on tv that stated that Prilosec could cause kidney damage. When my blood work was done recently, my bun creatinin ratio was at the top or slightly over the top end of the normal range. I was concerned about that.

Is ranitidine the generic for Zantac?

Brief Answer:
yes it is...

Detailed Answer:
Sorry for misreading your query... Stomach acidity symptoms can be treated adequately with such drugs within a couple of months (at most). Have you done an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy? Did your doctor check for Helicobacter pylori? If there were no findings in an endoscopy and no helicobacter pylori then perhaps this is just what we call 'dyspepsia' which requires treatment with drugs that reduce acidity.

Ranitidine is the active ingredient of zantac and its generics.

Kind Regards!

Hello Dr. Z,

Thank you for the info. I was tested for h-pylori in May of this year and it was negative. I haven't had an endoscopy for many years, I think I had one in 2002. I have had this indigestion problem for many, many years. None of my doctors have been much help in combatting it. They just seem to ignore it. So, I was wondering what drugs would be used to treat dyspepsia.

Also, I am sorry if I sounded rude before. Please accept my apologies. Thanks again for your information. Have a great day!

No offense taken...
I would suggest repeating the endoscopy (since the last one was a long time ago) to exclude more serious pathology and you can also check your gallbladder which may -sometimes- produce symptoms that resemble 'dyspepsia'.

Kind Regards!

Ok. Thank you for the advice! I will talk to my doctor about it.

I have to have an MRI on my shoulder pretty soon, will they do my whole body when they do the MRI? I would like for them to look at my knees because I have a lot of pain in them but it isn't constant.

Thank you!

Brief Answer:
it won't

Detailed Answer:
The MRI focuses on the particular area of interest, your shoulder in this case. It won't scan the rest of your body. You should check your knees at an orthopedics specialist first.

Kind Regards!
