Posted on Fri, 3 Jul 2015
Question: I was at airport toilet washing my sons poop when I flushed the toilet.
As I was bending low the water from toilet back splashed a bit on my face touching mouth and nose... It's been 5 days since incident occurred..should I worry about HIV or STI's if water in toilet had previous persons blood? Just anxious, any other bacterial infections that I should worry about?
Thx

Hello.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query.

I can understand your concern but you don't need to worry.HIV and other STD are only transmitted through close contact because the microorganisms responsible for these infections are very fragile and they don't resist long in environment. To transmit an infection ,is necessary for a certain pathogen to be in a very high concentration and to be very virulent. This is very unlikely to happen. The contact was very small and you really have nothing to worry about.
It is almost impossible to catch an infection this way.

You can put your mind at rest. You will be just fine.

Hope it helps.
Please feel free to ask for every question you might have.I would be happy to help.

Kind regards,

Hello again.

You don't need to worry about HIV and any STI's because these infections are transmitted only through close ,sexual contact.
As I said it is very unlikely to catch a bacterial infection this way.The amount of water that came in contact with your face was small and the concentration of a certain microorganism is low to cause an infection.

In my opinion you have nothing to worry about.

Take care.

Couple more incidents that I have a question about HIV transmission..
1. Can HIV be active on a chocolate piece kept on table and my son touched it and then put his finger in mouth , if there was any previous blood stain?
I know the answer is NO, but my anxiety makes me ask this question
Thx

Hello.

I can understand your anxiety about the health of your child.
You have nothing to worry about. The cause if HIV is a very fragile virus ,which doesn't resist long in the environment. This is the reason why close contact (blood transfusion , sexual intercourse etc ) is necessary to transmit the infection. The infection is transmitted from a human to a human. The virus is not transmitted through animals or objects.
Infection can happen is there is enough infected blood in an object that comes in contact with the blood (wound, cut) of another person.
This is not the case.

There is no risk of contracting HIV this way.

Try to relax and stop worrying about HIV.
Even the transmission of HIV in an unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected person is not 100 % ...so you have nothing to worry.Even a casual contact with the blood of an infected person ,won't infect you if your skin is intact.

Hope it helps.
Take care.
