Can STD Be Contracted Through Oral Sex?

default
Posted on Thu, 8 Oct 2015
Question: Not sure if you can read my original set of questions but I had brief oral encounter... By brief I mean less than 1 minute of unprotected oral where I pulled out in less than 1 minute. I ejaculated outside her mouth and never performed any kind of intercourse of any kind.. Took. Test last Saturday and results still not back. Should I be concerned for either the length of time the test is taking or the act itself. I'm just not sure what the likelyhood is of getting an oral std.

Brief Answer:
Oral sex is safer; orolabial herpes & rarely other STDs can be transmitted

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

Oral sex generally carries a low risk of an STD but it is not considered to be completely safe.
The risk of an STD is more for the female partner performing oral sex on a male specially if the act also involves ejaculation into mouth.
Oro-labial herpes can definitely be passed on to genital mucoa through oral sex.
Other STDs like Hiv, syphilis are rarely passed through saliva unless the person performing oral sex has oral sores which would increase chances of transmission.
Similarly, gonorrhea and chlamydia are not commonly acquired through oral sex unless the person giving oral sex has pharyngeal infection with gonorrhea or chlamydia.
Therefore in my view the only real and practical risk of an STD exists for a herpes virus infection through oro-labial sexual contact.

Thank you for your time.. The PA that saw me when I got tested said that my chances were nearly 0, obviously not 0 chance but pretty close. I just was concerned to the tingling sensation at the tip of my penis but I also know I've had this feeling before with all negative test results

Brief Answer:
Tingling is most like either chemical urethritis or non gonococcal urethrit

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

This tingling at tip of penis in absence of urethral discharge could be a result of chemical urethritis to soap etc that may get into anterior urethra through meatus during bath and irritate lining mucosa Or it could also be a case of non gonococcal urethritis e.g trichmoniasis. STD screening usually does nt include trichomoniasis.

Brief Answer:
Metronidazole is treatment of choice for trichomoniasis

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Trichomoniasis is not transmitted through oral sex, only through vaginal sex.

You said that you had this tingling before as well therefore if it is trichomoniasis then it has to be from a different vaginal sexual contact. Not this oral one. Other possibility is of course chemical urethritis. Metronidazole is the treatment of choice for trichmoniasis, not doxycycline.
Make sure you avoid soaps etc on delicate genital skin.
