Can STD Be Contracted Through Oral Sex?

default
Posted on Tue, 12 Jan 2016
Question: Hello, I had oral sex both fellatio and cunnilingus with a prostitute and I'm worried of contracting sexual diseases. I tested for HIV after a little more than a month and results showed negative. However, I'm afraid of other diseases such as Syphilis and Hepatitis from her bodily fluids. What do you think the risk is? I do plan to test but in a couple of months after the viruses incubated should there be any.
Thank you for your help in advance.

By the way, I did not experience any syphillus (rash) or hepatitis symptoms (rare) and want to know of my statistics of catching them, are the chances in my favor.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
The risk is very less but not Zero

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I have gone through your query and I have understood your concern.

Unprotected Oral sex, whether receptive or active, does carry a risk of transmission of STDs however the risk in general is less as compared to that of unprotected vaginal or anal sex.

One condition that usually does not transmit through unprotected oral sex is hepatitis B infection. It is more of a risk thorough genital route. Apart from this the other STDs like herpes, syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia and even Hiv can pass through Oral sex with herpes being the most common out of these. The risk though is much less for pure oral sex as compared to vaginal or anal sex and also depends on multiple factors like presence of oral or genital sores.

There are no exact figures for a purely oral sex because most individuals who have oral sex also practice other forms of sex during the same sexual encounter, therefore the figures for risks are not exclusively for oral sex.

Therefore in the absence of signs or symptoms, screening for all STDs at appropriate intervals, remains the most useful and reliable means of detecting or excluding the transmission of an STD by Oral sex.

Dr. Kakkar,

Thank you for your response and insight into this.
I found out that I got vaccinated (multiple stages) for Hep A and Hep B.
Will this greatly reduce my chances of infection with either Hep. I don't think theres a chance with Hep C unless there was blood in the fluid but it'd still have to be blood to blood, right?

Thank you,

Brief Answer:
You are safe

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

yes, vaccination would protect you against Hep B infection. Anyways Oral sex is not a risk for Hep B. Hepatitis A is not a sexually transmitted infection therefore there is no risk at all of Hep A.

Hep C, you rightly said, is only transmitted through exchange of blood e.g transfusion or sharing injection needles. It is not an STD.
