Can Septra Treat UTI?

default
Posted on Wed, 6 May 2015
Question: Hello I am a 62 year old male in good health. I have what appears to be a UTI. Painful and constant urge to urinate, Temperature is 101, chills. I have called my Urologist and can not be seen by him for a week. His Drs Aid has prescribed something for the urination pain and an order at a rural hospital for a urine culture. I have a history of urinary problems caused by a ruptured bladder in 2002 when I broke my pelvis in a horse wreck. All seems well after multiple Uritroscope surgeries in that year.
I am afraid to wait that long, and thinking that a trip to the ER while at the hospital for some antibiotic would be in order. It is a 2 hour drive to town. I live in Rural Nevada. I thinking that a GP Dr would simply prescribe Septra and send me on my way? I have Septra 960 mg tabs here at the ranch. I plan on going in and having the urine culture done. Just done want to wait in the expensive or all day.

Brief Answer:
Septra should cure the infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

From your description UTI is very probable issue. Your symptoms indicate that it is quite developed now and can reach kidneys. If so, it may be serious issue which can not wait day or two.
Septra should help in case of UTI. If you are really unable to see a doctor today and 2 hours trip seems too long, you may try this antibiotic (however you should always ask a doctor before starting such treatment).
Now if you decide not to go and take this antibiotic, urine culture can not be done. Simply it wont detect any bacteria as you will kill them with this antibiotic. So the result will be false negative.
In conclusion, either you will have urine culture before antibiotic treatment or you will take an antibiotic and urine culture wont be done at all.

Please also remember to drink plenty of fluids and have cranberries supplementation.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Thank you.
I have delivered the urine sample and my urologist has prescribed Urabell for the urination pain. I will pick up that prescription while I am in town. I do not want to wait for results of the urine culture to start the antibiotics. I will start taking the 960 mg Septra tabs twice a day for three days until the labs results come in.
Is that the level required to take care of the
Bacterial infection?

At least 2 days. If the symptoms will be gone after that time, no need to take it longer. In some cases treatment can take 5 days.
