Brief Answer:
The medications are to treat infertilty, and you can do test for pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

If you are otherwise healthy, and you have not been trying (having unprotected intercourse at least 2 to 3 times per week) to get pregnant for at least a year, treatment with fertility medications is not recommended. Fertility medications can increase your chance of getting blood clots and also high order multiple gestations (like triplets and more) if they are used in women were not infertile. Furthermore, before starting on any fertility treatment, it is recommended that you undergo some basic hormone tests and that your partner have a test of the sperm count as well, as 50% of the time fertility problems can have a male factor.

The two medications that you were prescribed are generally used to help induce ovulation in women who are infertile. The Ubiphene is generally taken beginning on the fifth day after your period begins for five days and then if your period is late, and you are not pregnant, the HerNP is used to bring down your period so you may do another cycle.

However, I agree with your instinct to not to take the medications unless you've been trying for at least a year and have had a thorough medical evaluation beforehand that demonstrates that not ovulating is the cause of your infertility.

So if your period is late, and you have had been having unprotected sex, there is a chance you already pregnant. I Would recommend performing an over-the-counter pregnancy test, as they are just as accurate as in the doctors office. Modern pregnancy tests are extremely accurate, and will become positive within 10 days to two weeks after conception. If you are not pregnant, it is not unusual to have irregular periods we you are going about pregnancy or under other kinds of stress. If you are experiencing premenstrual symptoms you likely will get your period within the next week or so.

It is impossible for me to know whether the fertility medications that were recommended to you would be effective without your being tested for hormone levels and determine if you are ovulating by yourself. In addition, the fertility medication will help you get pregnant if there is a problem with your partner's sperm.

So in summary, unless you have been trying a full year unsuccessfully, there is no role for fertility medications. The most successful way to achieve pregnancy is to have intercourse every other day from the time your period finishes until you start to feel premenstrual symptoms. Women typically ovulate about two weeks before they get their period, so if you look back at your cycles and figure out what time of the month is your ovulation time, you want to concentrate your efforts at intercourse as much as possible in a few days before and after this time.

I hope that I was able to adequately answer your question today, and that my advice was helpful. I would be happy to discuss this issue further if you desire. If you have any additional questions, kindly provide me with a bit more about your menstrual history and how long you have been trying to get pregnant and whether or not you have other children.

Otherwise, I wish you the best of luck in getting pregnant.

Regards,

Dr. Brown
