Can Zolpidem Increase Blood Sugar Levels?

default
Posted on Tue, 25 Aug 2015
Question: Can zolpidem increase your blood sugar and how much by usually, the doctor put me on zolpidem and lorazepam as a child after my dad died and I've been on them regularly since (that's over 10 years ago) but now I'm getting thirsty and my vission goes in and out of focus. Could this be connected at all? When I checked my blood sugar after 10mg of zolpidem it was 14.4 does zolpidem do this to people?

Thanx!

Just thought I'd mention that I'm of average hight and weight so don't think it's diabetes just a bit confused about the blood sugar levels.

Brief Answer:
not a side effect of zolpidem, diabetes occur in persons of any size

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Diabetes can occur in persons of any size. It is a disease that can affect persons who are small or large.

In terms of the zolpidem, it is not associated with any effect on blood sugars. This is not a known side effect, it does have other potential effects but this is not one of them.

Blood sugars increase in response to carbohydrate intake mainly though there can also be a slight increase in response to fat intake.

Abnormal blood sugars are: (1) fasting of greater than 5.6 or a (2) 2 hour post meal of greater than 7.8 (for diagnosis, a certain amount of sugar is taken as a meal at the doctor's office)

If the reading of 14.4 was a fasting reading or it was taken 2 or more hours after a meal, then it is abnormal.

Diabetes can also be diagnosed by a test called HBa1c.

Thirst is also a symptoms that can occur with elevated blood sugars.

If you are not clear about the time, it would be best to repeat it, doing a fasting blood sugar or having a HbA1c done by your doctor.
Since the 2 hour would be affected by your particular meal, it should not be used to diagnosis at home.

If you want you can also go to your doctor for the fasting or 2 hour readings.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
