Can A Rinnes And Webers Test Makke Headaches And Dizziness Worsen?

default
Posted on Tue, 9 May 2023
Question: I had an apt with a Dr. who did a number of tests and one of them was a hearing test where he put a vibrating fork beside my ears to hear the sound and then placed it on top of my head (between my forehead and the top of my head). Oh my goodness, I jumped from the vibration. I have also had a past concussion with headaches and am still recovering. Would this have done anything to make my headaches worse or my dizziness worse?? I seem to have a headache since I had it done? The vibration bothered my head. Why was that necessary?

I think it was called the Rinnes and Webers test. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
There is no chance of damage due to these routine tests.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

1. These are routine tests.

2. Yes, they are necessary. In your case, they reveal that you have increased sensitivity to sounds and vibration.

3. This is seen after the labyrinthine concussion and head injury.

4. Further investigation should include a CT Scan of the temporal bones to look for fractures or bony dehiscences around the otic capsule.

5. You can inform and request your doctor for medication to reduce the dizziness and headache. You can share the test findings and imaging here for further treatment advice.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Would you suggest a CT or would an MRI be better?

Brief Answer:
CT will be better initially.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

1. CT will be better initially as bone is invisible on MRI.

2. MRI is better for brain and soft tissue visualisation as compared to a CT.

3. CT and MRI are complimentary investigations and many patients require both for a full work'up. At times, contrast media are used for better differentiation between structures and tissues.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.
