Can A Deep Breath Decrease The Pressure In The Right Atrium?

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Jun 2016
Question: When someone takes a deep breath does it decrease the pressure in the right atrium allowing for increased venous return? Also if someone has increased pressure in the right atrium would it make it harder for the patient to inhale (feeling like it takes more effort to breathe in)? Would breathing in deep help decrease the right heart pressure or would deep breaths increase the pressure more due to an increase in venous return?

Brief Answer:
You need to understand the physiology first.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

When we inhale, we expand our chest and in the process increase the volume of the chest cavity. This causes the inner structures like heart and artia to expand and thereby draw in air and blood respectively. So, the venous return to the right atrium increases and we inhale air into our lungs. This is not actually directly related to the right atrial pressure in itself and a raised right atrial pressure would not make breathing difficult. However, breathing deep expands the chest even further and therefore increases the negative pressure and would increase the venous return even more.
