Can Alcohol Intoxication Affect EKG Test Results?

default
Posted on Tue, 6 Jun 2017
Question: Hi, my thirteen year old son drank a lot of vodka. When the paramedics him over, his ecg was not right. I can't remember exactly what they said but I remember the word 'elevation' was used. He was sent to hospital but by the time we arrived, the ecg was normal. Would this be caused by the alcohol or do you think my son has an under lying heart problem?
Thank you

Brief Answer:
MOst likely linked to alcohol intoxication!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for contacting us at healthcare magic.

Alcohol intoxication can cause EKG changes. Because these changes all resolved shortly after the intoxication management, it is more likely that alcohol is responsible and not an underlying heart disease. However, it is a good idea to get another check up done away from any alcohol intake to assess the functioning of the heart.

In all, more suggestive of alcohol related changes than an underlying heart disease. Good idea to get him checked again. On another note, try to help him stay away from alcohol. This isn't very helpful for him.

I hope this guides and helps. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be.

Thank you

His friend also drank a similar amount but his ecg did not show any changes. Why do you think that was?

Brief Answer:
We are all different!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

You would agree with me that we are all different. Not everyone who drinks same quantity would show the same signs and symptoms. Besides, most will drink and not go to the hospital.

I wish you well.
