Posted on Mon, 25 Jul 2016
Question: hi.. 3 yrs old with bit of wheezing. Dr not certain if it's asthma but seems to come on in spring.. last time had to go into hospital and got a ventolin inhaler and spacer.. she is going to childcare and don't have another spacer.. she has used ventolin without a spacer before.. and seems OK to use it and thinks it's a game.. she doesnt very much like the spacer anyway.. pharmacist said that she should use spacer but as she doesn't like it and I'm quite close to the childcare anyway so if anything I can go there and they have an asthma plan.. is she ok just with the inhaler without a spacer in your opinion? just wondering as pharmacist seemed to think it was a bad idea

Brief Answer:
spacer is needed

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I have gone through your question and completely recommend the use of spacer while using inhaler. Using inhaler along will deposit most of the drug within the mouth of child and inadequate dose will be delivered to her lungs. You may even use a mask along with spacer if the child seems uncooperative. The masks to be used with inhalers are available in markets.

Hopefully it will be of help.
Take care
