Can An Injury To The Chin After A Fall Cause A Concussion?

default
Posted on Fri, 6 Jan 2017
Question: My 7 year old son tripped in class, fell, and cut his chin on a desk. It stopped bleeding, and I used a butterfly bandage to close it after I brought him home around noon today. At bedtime, he was crying that it hurt, but more so about "everyone asking him about it and laughing at him", and he didn't want to wear a bandage. I chalked up his being emotional to being overtired and his chin being sore (as he is not a cryer), but am now worried he could have had a concussion... Is that possible? He did play outside in afternoon, was not nauseous, no vomiting. Can he get a concussion from hitting his chin on a desk as he fell? Many thanks!

Brief Answer:
Boosting his morale is most important.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. It seems that the stigma of public humiliation (caused by the children laughing at his "funny" bandage) is more than the physical trauma. The key solution is reassurance which only you can provide by standing beside him. You need to emphasize on the priorities and let him know that there would always be people who would be ridiculing him but that should not make him refrain from doing what is right.

Although it is possible to get a concussion, I doubt if that is the case. In case of concussion, ominous signs of head injury like
* Severe headache
* Loss of consciousness or altered consciousness
* Convusions
* Vomiting
would be present and in such a case you would need to get an urgent CT Scan of brain done. I doubt if that would actually be the case.

Let me know if I could help further.

Regards
