Can An Ultrasound Miss A Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Jan 2016
Question: Hello,

My husband and I have been trying to conceive for two months. My last known period was on October 31. I have a very regular 28 day cycle. In November my "period" came three days early and was significantly lighter and shorter than my regular periods last. It only lasted for two days whereas my normal periods last for 5 days and very heavy. I assumed this was implantation bleeding. Since then I have had all of the normal early pregnancy symptoms and my breasts have even enlarged. All home pregnancy tests show positive results so we went for an ultrasound at what I assumed to be 6 weeks. The ultrasound showed nothing but my uterine lining which was measured at 8mm. The doctor also said I was in my initial proliferative phase and that I was not pregnant. However according to my knowledge of my cycles if I am not pregnant I should be in my luteul phase and be expecting my period on time on December 22. This dr was extremely unhelpful and just kept insisting I wasn't pregnant. I am going for blood work tomorrow as my symptoms are still there and have really kicked in over the past few days. Is it possible that I am pregnant but not as far along as I think I am?

Brief Answer:
Repeat ultrasound and beta HCG levels.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
welcome to HCM.
I can understand your concerns.

At first instance, it appears that you could be pregnant. The reason being positive pregnancy tests at home and early pregnancy symptoms.

Ultrasound findings are more evident after 4-6 weeks of pregnancy. So, I would suggest you to go for a repeat ultrasound scan from a specialist and blood beta HCG levels to get a more clear status of your pregnancy.

Hope this helps.
I wish you all the luck.
Take care.
Thanks.
