Question : Dear Doctor, My son is asthmatic almost since birth, and might have acquired it genetically as my mother-in-law is asthmatic. Earlier he used to take asthelin puffs only when grasping for breath and ill. But we noted for last two years, he takes atleast one dose of two asthelin puffs through plastic inhaler and sometime two doses daily and before playing, swimming etc. Is it ok to take asthelin puffs daily. He is 17 now and we are worried about how long this would continue. what are the remedies. does yoga have a remedy. kind advise solicited. Is this ailment for life or has a remedy.

Brief Answer:
Has he ever undergone PFT?

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Asthma is allergic Airway disease.
Treatment of asthma should be based on PFT (pulmonary function test) report.
PFT will tell you about severity of the disease and treatment is based on severity only.
Asthalin is having salbutamol. It is short acting beta 2 agonist (SABA).
It's action lasts for only 2-4 hours.
So it is not ideal drug for asthma control.
It is used as rescue medication for asthma.
Long acting beta 2 agonist (LABA) and inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are the treatment of choice for better control of asthma.
But their dose should be decided on PFT report.
So please let me know
1. Has he ever undergone PFT?
2. Has he ever consulted pulmonologist?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your son. Thanks.
