Can Blood Thinning Drugs Be Discontinued In Absence Of Symptoms?

default
Posted on Fri, 10 Jun 2016
Question: Should I go back onto Warfarin, or should I stop the blood thinning drugs completely. I do not have high blood pressure etc. Atrial fibrillation was discovered by accident during a pre operative assessment. I had no symptoms. I had an ablation procedure initially but that was totally unsuccessful. I have also had cardiac diversions etc which again were unsuccessful. I have no symptoms - no problems walking, climbing stairs etc.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I went through your query and understood your problem.
According to protocols, any patient with atrial fibrillation should be on anticoagulantion therapy to prevent stroke or myocardial infarction.
So all the drugs you mentioned are majority of that category which keeps blood thin and reduces the chances of any thromboembolic event.
So even if you don't have any symptoms right now it is important that you continue these drugs for preventive purpose.
You should be checking your coagulation profile regularly to check whether the doses you are taking are optimal for you or not or are they more for you and need dose reduction.
The procedures you mentioned were unsuccessful so there is no reason tht you should be stopping the drugs and its recommended to continue.
Just once consult your doctor and get your coagulation profile checked and see whether the doses are optimal or not.
I hope I have answered your query well.
If you have any questions kindly ask me back.
Thank you
