Posted on Tue, 7 Feb 2017
Question: Hi Doctor,

My daughter is 5 months old. Till now I have been exclusively breastfeeding her. I am planning to resume my job now. I need to start giving her bottle milk. Can I give her cow milk? Do you suggest any formula milk for her? Is there anything I need to keep in mind while buying a feeding bottle? Can I use feeding bottle of any available brand?

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Better to avoid bottle feeding - tips on feeding suggested

Detailed Answer:
Hi.... I understand your concern. But it is better to avoid bottle feeding as, how much ever you sterilize the bottle, some amount of bacteria and viruses might remain and cause diarrhea for the baby.

As per W H O recommendation you need to give exclusive breastfeeding till 6 months of age.

But as you say that you need to rejoin the work, I suggest you to give formula feeding with appropriate dilution, but from a spoon or paladey and not through a feeding bottle.

In fact any formula is the same in energy, it all depends upon the palatability of the baby accepting a specific formula.

Do not give Cow's milk till 1 year of age.

Any feeding bottle available commercially is the same.

Sterilization of the feeding bottle using and mechanical sterilizer or boiling water is extremely important.

Thank you doctor for the reply.

Actually my daughter is 5 months 2 weeks now, and I am planning to resume job starting next month. I will exclusively breast feed her till 6 months. Can you suggest any formula to start with, for use after she is 6 months old? If possible, please suggest an alternative as well.

I’ve attached photos of her fingers and leg. Her skin is damaged (two weeks back it was good), may be because of winter (I don’t know). Can you suggest anything for that? Or can we just see if it goes without any attention?

Thank you again.

Brief Answer:
Suggestions on complimentary feeding and eczema

Detailed Answer:
Hi....the photographs suggest eczema.

Actually from 6 months you can start complimentary feeding.

At 6 months age you can start giving Cerelac stage one rice or Nestum rice stage 1 etc. All are same in calories and energy. Only thing is palatability which is subjective for each kid.

Other home-made food options will be -
1. Daal and rice well cooked and made into a porridge along with ghee
2. Boiled apple or banana and mashed into a paste.
3. Any made cereal porridge preparation with additional ghee added.

Remember certain principles like -
1. Add one food material / cereal or fruit per week. This will be useful because if he develops vomiting or diarrhoea, we will know what to avoid.
2. Add vegetables and fruits made into a paste surely to avoid constipation.
3. Do not add too much sugar as it may cause diarrhoea.

Regarding eczema -

This is a simple sort of skin allergy. The trick of the management is keeping the skin moist and never allowing it to be dry. For this oil massage and lotions like Oilatum or Atogla will help. Regarding cure options - eczema is a sort of allergy...allergies can only be controlled and can never be cured. But usually kids grow out of it...that is as the age progresses, they become better starting from 6 months.

Hope this helps...I will be glad to answer any of your further queries.

Thank you doctor for the detailed answer.

When can we introduce water to the baby?

Is the camera flash light (mobile phone/professional camera) ok for the baby (eyes)? should we avoid exposing her to camera flash light? She is staring at the camera when we take pictures.

Brief Answer:
Introduce water at 6 months age, avoid camera flash directly into eyes

Detailed Answer:
Hi.... coming to your queries one by one -

1. You can introduce water starting from 6 months of age.

2. Any bright light is deleterious to the baby's eyes and retina. Please avoid using camera flash light when you are taking snap of the baby especially when the baby is looking directly into the camera.
