Brief Answer:

Muscle pain is more likely.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

The pain in the lower back that is running down to the thigh is more likely to be due to disc prolapse or a nerve root compression at the level of the lower spine.

The decrease in pain on lying down is usually seen in such muscular pains. It can be relieved with muscle relaxants, oral pain killers and local analgesic gel with a hot compress.

The pain of renal stone is more intense and does not radiate to the thighs. This subsides on taking plenty of oral fluids and anti spasmodics. An ultrasound scan can help in detecting any renal calculi.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
