default
Posted on Thu, 12 Mar 2015
Question: Can cricopharyngeal spasms ever close off my airway? My spasms have been getting progressively more intense (seems axiety induced). I cannot even swollow small pills or small food when it is in spasm. Makes me worry the same will close off my trachea. Have my first ENT appt next month but cannot wait for the answer. Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Cricopharyngeal spasm have no effect on airway

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I have gone through your query and for your kind information cricopharyngeal spasm have no effect on airway including trachea. It have no exact etiology but some authors suggest that it may be anxiety induced, it is the self limiting disease, if the symptoms increase day by day then you may try anxiolytic drug such as alprazolam after consulting your doctor.
No need to so much worry, it is not a cancerous disease.

Wish you good health.
