Brief Answer:
Diabetes could be the cause.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for sending in your query. Depending on the history you have provided, diabetes seem to be the most likely culprit. In the advanced stages, diabetes may lead to new blood vessel growth over the retina. The new blood vessels can break and cause scar tissue to develop, which can pull the retina away from the back of the eye. This the reason for the retinal detachment. I believe, it has happened because of lack of proper followup after the diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy. With prescribed followup this severe complication could have been avoided. Please get back to us in case of further query.
