Can Ear Drops Cause Anaphylaxis?

default
Posted on Fri, 7 Aug 2015
Question: Was prescribed Ciprodex for an outer ear infection due to scratching my ear and caused a small tear and it got infected. I am allergic to some sporin and sulfa drugs. I have never taken cipro anything and am scared to death of being allergic. Can eardrops cause anaphylaxis? I have never had that reaction with anything..only had hives from reactions but because I am scared to death of side effects, I am scared to use the Ciprodex.

Brief Answer:
Ear drops cant cause serious allergic reactions

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.
First, if you are allergic to ciprofloxacin (if this is verified by previous intake) then you should not take this antibiotic. Cipro is not sulfa and I am not sure what you mean by sporin. Eardrops can cause serious allergic reactions, especially not anapyhlaxis, but in case of known allergy to certain antibiotic you should avoid both oral or ear drops forms since there are other available alternatives. If you didnt take cipro by now, and you dont know if you re allergic. then I suggest to take on pill and see what happens,if some signs of allergy occur, you ll know if you are allergic. Serious reactions are extremely rarely reported. Wish you good health. Regards

It isn't a pill, its eardrops. Ciproflaxcin/dexamethasone drops. (sporins = cephalasporin drug allergy)
