Can Excess Or High Airway Inflammation Cause You Lose Breath As You Speak?

default
Posted on Thu, 13 Oct 2016
Question: Two Questions to start the week,

Can excess or high airway inflammation cause you lose breath as you speak. Would it be the closed off airway not letting enough airflow to pass and vibrate the vocal chords?

Second, I have been on a negative attitude regarding stress and anxiety lately. Negative as not thinking of it but just putting up with it and thinking of what future plans i am trying to make, So by not letting it be constant, how far out do you think it will take to come down and reduce inflammation. I do not want it to be but I am hoping your answer will be take some time as in a few months or more.

Brief Answer:
Airway inflammation can not cause this.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
I have gone through the PFT s you have attached in previous questions.
It is suggestive of only small Airway inflammation.
And this small Airway inflammation can not cause spasm of trachea and cause breathlessness while speaking.
So no need to think about small Airway inflammation as a cause for this symptom.
This is mostly due to stress and anxiety you are having.
Stress and anxiety can cause vocal cord dysfunction and this can cause breathing difficulty while speaking.
This is just a possibility.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

I don't know if it's a spasm. I feel I don't have enough air to run over vocal cords to hold a short conversation

No. I don't think that stress is cause unless it constructs airways so that I have less to use to make sounds as I push it over v cords

Brief Answer:
Have you ever consulted ENT doctor in the past?

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Healthcare Magic.
Honestly speaking, this symptom of yours is very atypical.
I don't think about organic disease of trachea, vocal cords or lung which cause this symptom.
It is better to first rule out vocal cord related diseases.
So please let me know

I have seen an ent in the past. 3 years ago, I have considered this part of my small airway disorder. In between running out of air when exerting on stairs and quick walking, I get the same sensation when talking.

I can understand your concern.
Honestly speaking, I don't think it is due to small Airway inflammation.
Small airways are very small and we can not see through naked eye.
While your symptoms are associated with larger airways. And your PFT is clear for larger airways.
May I ask you why you consulted ENT doctor in past? Is it for the same issue or some other issue?

Yes, that procedure is painful and cumbersome.
Worsening GERD might be a cause for your current symptoms.
So we should avoid aggravating factors for GERD.
So take pantoprazole twice daily on empty stomach. Avoid hot and spicy food.
Drink plenty of fluids orally.
Avoid stress and tension, be relax and calm.
Keep 2-3 pillows under your head in your bed to avoid reflux.
