Can Excessive Crying Cause Bleeding From Throat?

default
Posted on Thu, 15 Oct 2015
Question: I HAVE BEEN CRYING DAILY AFTER THE DEATH OF MY HUSBAND. I HAVE NOTICED BLOOD IN THE PHLEGM IN MY THROAT IN THE MORNINGS. I DID SEE AN ENT DOC LAST WEEK AND SHE FOUND NO EVIDENCE OF A PROBLEM IN MY NOSE OR THROAT. SHE SUGGESTED I MIGHT WANT TO SEE MY GI DOC AND I WILL BUT REALLY WONDER IF THE CRYING COULD HAVE AN EFFECT ON MY SINUS TO THE POINT OF BLEEDING AND IT RUNNING DOWN THE BACK OF MY THROAT DURING THE NIGHT.

Brief Answer:
yes it could

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome. First, I am very sorry about your loss. I hope you will recover soon.
Yes, crying could cause bleeding at any place from mouth to throat. It may cause breakage of capillaries in nise, sinus, mouth throat or lungs. So ENT dr doesnt need to see some active bleeding or wound since small capillaries are not visible after bleeding has stopped. However, if this happens again, I suggest gastroenterologic and pulmologic work up. WIsh you good health. Regards
