Can Folliculitis Appear On Non-hairy Areas Of Skin?

default
Posted on Mon, 30 May 2016
Question: Dear Doctor

Can folliculitis appear on skin surface without hair?

For me I got red, small bumps which are very itchy at some times and disappearing in 2-3days.

Also I have started to get these kind of bumps on different parts of my body, except face from last 2months. It is appearing in both hairy and non-hairy areas of my skin.

Its making me in a panic situation because I had intercourse sex before 2months and 3 weeks back. I don't have any other symtoms like fever, throat pain etc.

What can be the exact reason behind this doctor.

Thank you
doctor

Brief Answer:
Kindly upload a few images

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I am dr.kakkar (dermatologist). I have gone through your query and I have noted your concern.

I would keep a possibility of Scabies or Papular Urticaria. I don't think it is a manifestation of an STD Or in anyway related to sexual intercourse.

I would be able to guide you better if you can upload a few representative images of the affected area. You may upload images either at "Reports Section" Or you may mail me at YYYY@YYYY with the subject line of this mail as Attention:Dr.Kakkar.

All of body except palms and soles has pilosebaceous units and can develop folliculitis or follicular lesions.

Brief Answer:
permethrin cream, topical steroid cream and cetrizine tablet

Detailed Answer:
Hi. Thank you. I have reviewed the Images.

I would like to treat you empirically for scabies. I would suggest a single overnight application of 5% permethrin cream, whole body except face i.e from neck downwards followed by a bath next day.
In addition, specifically for the itchy raised papules I would suggest that you apply a topical steroid cream e.g either mometasone furoate 0.1% cream or clobetasol propionate 0.05% cream, twice daily for a a few days.
You may also take a tablet of cetrizine 10 mg once daily in evening for symptomatic relief from itching.
