Question : Hi Dr XXXXXXX what is the best way to prevent transmission of genital herpes to a sexual partner, even if there is not an outbreak and a condom is worn? is there a pill that can be taken prior to intercourse? or does one have to take a suppression medication all the time? if so, what is the best pill and prescription details?

Brief Answer:

Acyclovir ointment and Tablet.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

First of all, do not panic.

As you might be aware that in case of Genital Herpes, the contagious transmission of the infection occurs when the disease is in the pustular phase and secretions from pustules are contacted.

Secondly, if one of the partners has visible and diagnosed Herpes lesions then a course of antivirus medicines should be started promptly.
This will help to dry up the lesions and prevent transmission.

You can seek prescription support from your treating doctor for Tablet Acyclovir 600 mg 4 times a day for 5 days.
Local application of Acyclovir ointment will be of help.

Please seek proper sex counseling about safe and protected sex activity.

Keep private parts clean and dry. Many times Heroes infection remains in the dormant stage and can affect nerves, so regular follow up with your treating doctor is advisable.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
