Posted on Wed, 23 Apr 2014
Question: I am 57 years old. I have not had a period in 5 years and had a tubiligation 20 years ago. I have been taking metformin for about a year. I have just became sexually active after three years. Is it possible to get pregnant on this medicine? I also have found some small knots in my breast since I started taking this medicine. Could the medicine be causing that too. Thank you XXXXX

Brief Answer: IVF with donor egg or surrogate mother Detailed Answer: Hello mam, at the age of 57 especially when you are not having your regular periods for 5 years is a difficult task. Still the options for you are -Donor egg IVF i. e. Taking the egg from a female of age less than 30 and mixing it with the sperms of your partner and then transferring the resultant embryo in your uterus after preparing your uterine endometrial lining with hormones. But success is in the range of 10-20%. -surrogate mother where the lady ready for it can be given in-utero insemination (IUI) of your partner's semen. In this case if lady is healthy and age less than 30 then chances of pregnancy are around 40%. Second one is a simpler and cheaper procedure. Metformin won't be helpful in your case. These knots you are experiencing are not related to medicine but still get them examined by a surgeon once to rule out any cancerous abnormality. Take care and all the best.

I am not wanting to get pregnant I am way too old for that. I just wanted to make sure I couldn't get pregnant. I know metformin has something to do with your hormones and I was worried about it starting my period again after all these years. I didn't think I could get pregnant without a period but miracles can happen. So can you set my mind at ease?

Brief Answer: no chance of conception Detailed Answer: Oh, mam I would like to assure you that you can't get pregnant now by any means. Yes you are right metformin is given to patients eager for conception but that is in patients with polycystic ovaries who have insulin resistance. And metformin in your case is not going to fiddle with your hormones. I wish you the best of health. Take care
