Question: My husband has a pacemaker. Today he bought a massage/heat cushion. The directions say to consult a DR. before using. Why? What are the concerns?

Brief Answer:
according to XXXXXXX heart association causes little or no problems

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The XXXXXXX heart foundation website (www.heart.org) mentions the use of heating pads with pacemakers but they list it as one of the devices that are associated with little or no risk at all.
You can take a look at the website to confirm. Can go directly to the site or search pacemakers and heat pad.

They also list devices that can potentially cause a problem though they also say that though problems can occur with these devices, in most cases, nothing happens eg metal detectors, cell phones, mp3 players, anti theft systems
Information regarding these potential effects is also available at that site.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

It is not a heating pad, it is a full body massage mat with soothing heat (that you lie on). The instructions say that it should not be used in the following cases..... 2. Pacemaker recipients should consult a doctor before use...
We were wondering what harm could it do to someone with a pacemaker?

Brief Answer:
concern that it may alter the setting and function

Detailed Answer:
HI

Sorry about the delayed reply

There is some concern that some devices may alter the setting of pacemakers affecting their function. This is the possible concern but it is not likely.

Even with the devices that the heart foundation listed as possibly problematic, they state they are not too likely to cause interference.

If you are still concerned, which is fine, then it should be taken to your doctors office or he or she should be contacted
