Posted on Wed, 6 Sep 2017
Question: My mother had an allergic reaction to Macrobid after 4 days. She went back to the doctors office after 24 hours. She initially started that evening one dose of Cipro and her blood pressure elevated and she was having pain, increase ringing in the ears. The office said to push fluids which she has been doing for about a week now. However she is still having ringing in the ears, her blood pressure is extremely elevated and having now to take blood pressure pills which I monitor her blood pressure. Her stomach is upset and her throat tonight had yellow phlegm. Should I start the Cipro in the morning or should she go to the emergency room. Each day she seems to be getting worse. Her blood pressure did go down after an hour.

Brief Answer:
Supportive care

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking
I read your question and I understand your concern. High blood pressure can cause dizziness and ringing in ears which resolves after some time once blood pressure is controlled . Azithromycin is not used nor ciprofloxacin in old age as both these medications have their own serious side effect profile in old ages. Safer ones are cefexime etc. Upset stomach is side effect of cipro ans yellow phlegm could be airways infection. You mother needs supportive care with antibiotics and for ringing a complete auditory and vestibular function evaluation. Consult her doctors and let them decide what is best for her.
I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and of her and don't forget to close the discussion please.
