Posted on Sat, 13 Jun 2015
Question: Hi, I have unbearable toothache, my dentist gave me amoxicillin today and I wonder if I can take 2x 500mg at once. I have also taken 3x500mg paracetemol to help the pain. I'm going for root canal treatment in 2 days and getting into a state about the pain. I am a 67 year old Scottish man just above average weight (5ft 8in and 11st 8 pounds). Please advise. Thankyou

Brief Answer:
Better stick to prescription plan, Take some NSAIDs for pain

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Amoxicillin is not for the pain it is for the infection. Some doctors may advise two 500 pills at start . They call it loading dose. 2 to 3 tablets in a day is the normal dosage.

If the pain is not responding to paracetamol , get some anti inflammatory medication like ibuprofen or flurbiprofen. Paracetamol does not have anti inflammatory effect.

Nut shell you can take two amoxicillin pills together but better stick to the regimen advised and you may take some NSAIDs for the pain relief.

I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.
