Question : Query for Dr. XXXXXXX Tayal
I am doing better with the tendonitis in my elbow. Now I am battling muscle spasms and tension in my left shoulder blade area. Last time I had these symptoms was before I had to have neck surgery due to narrowing in my spinal canal. I have 20 mg prednisone but I can remember how I am supposed to take it. Could you please help me with this too?
Thank you for your time! XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Start with oral muscle relaxants and exercises.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The muscle spasms in the shoulder blade area can be related to narrowing of spinal canal in the cervical spine.
Prednisolone is not the first line treatment. You can start with a hot compress and oral muscle relaxants after meals. Doing regular neck and back strengthening exercises under the guidance of a physiotherapist will also help. This should take care of your mild symptoms. In case the spasms persist then steroids like prednisolone are needed to reduce the inflammation around the spinal canal.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.

Thank you for your reply! I have been taking muscle relaxants and using heating pads and compresses since it started. I am now having muscle spasms and pain running under my left arm (pinch nerve like pain). This is very uncomfortable. Would it be advisable to see a chiropractor?

Brief Answer:
Prednisolone can help you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The symptoms that you have are likely to be due to a pinched nerve. If muscle relaxants and heating pads are not helping then you can start with prednisolone twice a day for a week after meals. In case it improves do taper the doses to once a week for next three days and then stop it. In case the symptoms are persistent then it is better to consult an orthopedician for a proper examination and investigations like MRI scan to see the extent of nerve compression.
Hope my answer is helpful.
