Posted on Tue, 10 Jun 2014
Question: Hi... I am XXXXX 27 yrs married. Having pcos. Periods were irregular. After having glyciphage for 10 days I got my periods. Since I'm trying conceive my dr prescribed me to have siphene 200mg on 3rd day of my period. But now suddenly she said no need of siphene and asked me to continue with glyciphage with APCOD for another month.
Now my actual query is
1) can I take siphene including glyciphage?
2) or should I continue only with glyciphage?
3) if I take siphene having pcos, will it help me conceive?
4) further if I get pregnant in this situation will I have a healthy baby?
Please help me..

Brief Answer:
TAKE GLYCIPHAGE WITH APCOD. FOLLOW THE ADVICE.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

For successful conception, both of you need to follow these suggestions:

1) At first, you have to establish a REGULAR cycle with proper OVULATION. For that, supportive treatment like progesterone pill or ovulation induction drug may be required in this case.

2) As you get your period after taking GLYCIPHAGE (Metformin), then you should continue this medicine along with APCOD as per your doctor's prescription.

You may NOT need to take ovulation induction drug like SIPHENE (Clomiphene) in this case as you have gotten your period already. Besides that, SIPHENE has some adverse effects like it can trigger multiple ovulation which can aggravate Poly Cystic Ovary, increased chance of Twin/ Triplet pregnancy, development of corpus luteum cyst, vasomotor symptoms etc.

It is commonly given in case of irregular period with AN-OVULATION or OLIGO-OVULATION and failed hormonal treatment (Progesterone or Metformin).

3) You may need to undergo serial follicular study (D12 to D16) to monitor your ovulation or you can use Ovulation Prediction Kit (or LH kit) to track down your ovulation time in the middle of each cycle.

4) You have to do REGULAR unprotected sex close to your ovulation day (14 days prior to next due date) or (11th to 19th days of each regular 28 to 30 days cycle) to maximize the chance of pregnancy.

5) Both of you must take a healthy balanced diet with more fresh fruits and vegetables. Low carbohydrate diet is preferable. Take vitamin-E and folic acid supplements for 3 months in preconception period and there after.

6) Do light to moderate exercise for physical fitness and to reduce or control body weight. You must avoid mental stress completely by regular meditation/ yoga. Maintain a healthy life style. You would continue prescribed medications.

Yes, you will have a healthy baby by undergoing above treatment protocol. You wouldn't be worried about that.

Hope, above information is quite helpful to you. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Wish your good health and take care yourself.

Regards,
Dr Soumen
