No, a kidney cyst cannot become cancerous as such. However, a renal cancer may co-exist with a kidney cyst.

Kidney cysts usually require surgical drainage. Of course, when there is renal cancer, it needs partial nephrectomy depending on the renal function status.

Ultimately, patients with kidney cysts require renal replacement therapies in the form of dialysis or renal transplant.
