Can Lumbar Spondylosis Cause Compression Of Spinal Nerves And Neuropathic Pain?

default
Posted on Thu, 28 Dec 2023
Question: My wife had 3 surgeries since last May to open up the bone area where the nerves coming down the spine go through. The doctor nicked the sac that holds the spinal fluid on the first surgery and glued the sac to stop the bleeding. The next day she couldn't walk and he determined it was a hematoma from the bleeding. Back into surgery and found the sac was still losing fluid causing the hematoma so he glued it closed. 3 or 4 days later she can't stand on her own, back to the hospital doctor said they desided to go higher up on the spine and do the same surgery there. Another hematoma, opened her up and put in 2 drains. Next day took the drains out. She comes home and ever since she has severe burning pain in her right leg from the thigh down through the knee. Also, both feet turn red and purple and blister on the toes and only relief is elevating her feet. Assuming this is all related. The last surgery was in August and they sent her to physical therapy to build up her muscle. This is March and she can't go to pt because of the leg pain. They say it will take 1 -2 years for her to get back to normal. She says the leg pain is worse than it was before the first surgery. Any ideas? She really doesn't want to get cut on again but she would like to be pain free and able to walk.

Brief Answer:

Related to the surgery

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

I can understand what had happened. Your wife possibly had developed lumbar spondylosis which was causing compression of spinal nerves and thus causing the neuropathic pain.

It is unfortunate that she had to suffer from complications of surgery. Happens sometimes. Possibly nobody's fault.

However, the subsequent paraesthesia (the burning pain) is likely to be directly related to the surgery wherein nerve compressions occurred once again.

Her doctor is right to suggest that it may take a year or two for recovery. Till then physical therapy and supportive management is the way out.

I understand that it is a difficult situation. But it cannot really be helped. Taking Methylcobalamin (Vitamin B12) supplement 1500 mcg once daily for at least a couple of months could make a difference.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
