Can Lying On The Back Harm The Fetus During 17 Weeks Of Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Fri, 17 Jul 2015
Question: Hi Dr Koregol
I am 17 weeks and 2 days pregnant. On the day of 17 weeks I had an ultrasound which showed the baby was very healthy and moving about, heart rate 148bpm.
I was also starting to feel flutters in my lower abdomen for a few days. I have been sitting propped up or lying down on back for maybe 10-15 minutes a day to feel these movements. I lay on my back for about 15 minutes last night and ever since then I have felt no movements all of a sudden. I am terrified lying on my back has hurt the baby or worse. I have just been reading that lying on your back is bad for your baby.
I am very worried.

Brief Answer:
Lying on back wont harm at this stage of pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Good to see you back.

I understand your worries about lying on back.

Lying on back at later stages of pregnancy is harmful and not so early before 20 weeks.

You can comfortably take rest lying on back for 10 to 15 minutes which will not harm baby.

Moreover it is on and off movements of baby at this early gestation. It takes time to feel movements fully. Hence don't worry about loss of movements for some time.

I hope your worry is addressed. Let me know if you need any more help.

Regards
